China’s first hydrogen-powered ship had its first voyage in Yichang City, Hubei Province, marking the completion of another hydrogen project. The 49.9-meter-long Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No. 1 was launched during the China Green Energy Development Conference in the city and will be used for transit, patrol, and emergency response in the Three Gorges reservoir area in the central province.

China’s first hydrogen-powered ship had its first voyage in Yichang City, Hubei Province, marking the completion of another hydrogen project.
The ship was created by a group of businesses, including Jianglong Shipbuilding, China Yangtze Power Corporation, and China State Shipbuilding Corporation, and is propelled by a 500kW hydrogen fuel cell. The ship, which was the first hydrogen-powered vessel to receive certification from the China Classification Society, was designed in collaboration with the Wuhan Changjiang Ship Design Institute and the Three Gorges Navigation Authority.

Along with the development of the ship, the city also built Yangjia Bay, in the lower part of the Three Gorges, the first inland dock-type hydrogen production and refuelling station in the nation. The green electricity and hydrogen demonstration station electrolyzes water and generates 240 kg of hydrogen per hour that can be delivered straight to the ship using clean energy produced by the reservoir power station.
With a 200-kilometer range, it is anticipated that using the ship will cut CO2 emissions by 343.67 tonnes annually by substituting 103.16 tonnes of fuel oil.

In an effort to boost its decarbonization efforts, the marine sector is investigating petrol as an alternative fuel, and the Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No. 1 is the latest to join the expanding number of hydrogen-powered ships. Nike inked a contract earlier this year for a hydrogen-powered inland container ship with Future Proof Shipping (FPS) and BCTN as part of FPS’s goal to construct a fleet of ten zero-emission inland and short-sea boats over the following five years.
