In coordination with the Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (J&K RTC) and the relevant district administration, the Tribal Affairs Department (TAD) announced plans on Monday for the wintertime relocation of pastoral tribal households from Kashmir to the Jammu region.

According to a statement released here by an official spokesman, family migration will start in mid-September from higher elevations and last through November 2023. The transportation service for the tribal population during migration was accepted as one of the main deliverables by the administrative council led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and it was frequently checked by Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta.

Nodal officers have been informed by the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to assist with migration and make related arrangements. Shahid Choudhary, secretary of tribal affairs, previously discussed the plan with G Prasanna Ramaswamy, secretary of transportation, DCs, RTC management, and other related departments. The MD J&K RTC, the Director of Tribal Affairs, the Director of the Tribal Research Institute (TRI), the Secretary, the Advisory Board, and other officers were also present at the meeting.

The deputy Commissioners (DCs) of Pulwama, Anantnag, Ramban, Udhampur, Kulgam, Shopian, Poonch, and Rajouri would monitor the migration and put the necessary provisions in place.

The transport department’s secretary stated that J&K RTC had informed DCs of its readiness and would deliver the trucks in response to their request. For convenient and prompt service, the DCs have also been given permission to employ trucks and light commercial vehicles locally. In collaboration with the J&K RTC, the Animal and Sheep Husbandry Department, and local authorities, the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of Pulwama, Anantnag, Ramban, Udhampur, Kulgam, Shopian, Poonch, and Rajouri would monitor the migration and put the necessary provisions in place.
