The largest aluminium rolling and recycling company in the world, Hindalco Industries Ltd., and a specialised engineering company, Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd., have formed a strategic alliance to design and produce cutting-edge aluminium rail waggons and coaches. This alliance has the potential to revolutionise the Indian rail industry. Through creative design, this alliance not only helps Indian Railways meet its emission reduction goals but also improves operational effectiveness.

Hindalco and Texmaco’s collaboration aims to advance waggon design in support of Indian Railways’ ambitious ‘Mission 3000 MT’ that seeks to double freight capacity to 3,000 million tonnes by 2027. The partners hope to build a top-notch manufacturing facility in India where Texmaco’s ability to construct goods cars would be combined with Hindalco’s special aluminium alloys and fabrication and welding know-how.

The strategic partnership aims to take advantage of aluminum’s natural advantages in the rail transportation industry. In line with Indian Railways’ net-zero goals, aluminium is used in rail waggons and coaches to increase speed and payload capacity while also lowering carbon dioxide emissions. These advantages are shown by Hindalco’s patented aluminium goods rake, which debuted last year. It is 180 tonnes lighter, offers a remarkable 19% higher payload-to-tare weight ratio, and uses much less energy and wear and tear.

“Our partnership’s pivotal aspect is the reduction of carbon emissions and enhancement of operational efficiency,” stressed Satish Pai, managing director of Hindalco Industries. We have demonstrated the potential of aluminium in the rail business by introducing the first aluminium rake in India. In line with Indian Railways’ net-zero ambitions, this collaboration will further solidify our commitment to effective and efficient freight and passenger movement.

With an 80-year history of producing goods vehicles, Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd. brings significant knowledge to the table. Vice Chairman of Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd. Mr. Indrajit Mookerjee praised the agreement as a paradigm-shifting step towards lowering the industry’s carbon footprint and fostering a positive environmental impact. The collaboration also fits in well with the government of India’s drive for independence (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and the continuing modernization initiatives of Indian Railways, which include improvements to stations, coaches, and the metro rail system in addition to improved rail car design.

Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd.’s Deputy Managing Director, Sudipta Mukherjee, emphasised the partnership’s potential to introduce effective rolling stock with a lower carbon footprint, aiding in the development of a sustainable railway.

Establishing a local factory producing premium aluminium waggons, coaches, large containers, and components will support the Central Government’s initiative to create dedicated freight corridors, promoting efficiency and lowering freight rates. The world’s largest aluminium firm by revenue, Hindalco Industries Limited is a $28 billion metals behemoth that also holds a sizable market share in copper. Hindalco is the industry leader in flat-rolled goods and aluminium recycling, along with its affiliate Novelis.

The flagship company of the Adventz Group, Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd, is a major exporter of castings and a producer of railway freight cars, passenger coaches, and metro coaches. Its 2012 waggon leasing partnership with Touax Rail is another example of how committed it is to rail transportation innovation. In this ground-breaking partnership, Hindalco and Texmaco are ready to revolutionise the Indian rail sector while promoting efficiency and sustainability.
