Central Railway’s Kharkopar-Uran Rail Line Nears Opening after a Delay of 25 Years in Mumbai

The long-awaited train service on the Mumbai division of Central Railway’s Seawoods – Kharkopar – Yran Corridor is finally scheduled to begin within the next two weeks after experiencing a continual delay for more than 25 years. The completion of this important project coincides with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s (MMR) need for improved connectivity, particularly the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), as the MMR is expanding quickly.

The reports state that the rail line should be fully operating within the next 8 to 10 days. The fact that the project has experienced severe delays, though, is meaningless. A 216-month time overrun has been reported by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The long-awaited train service on the Mumbai division of Central Railway’s Seawoods – Kharkopar – Yran Corridor is finally scheduled to begin within the next two weeks after experiencing a continual delay for more than 25 years.

The Central Railways has finished building the rail line from Uran onward. However, the Kharkopar-Uran Corridor’s second segment needs to be formally opened. Once fully operational, the Fourth Corridor, a 26.7-kilometer rail route linking Belapur, Seawoods, and Uran, will be used by the Central Railways to run local trains.

The route has undergone extensive testing, and the Commissioner of Railway Safety has given the go-ahead for a top speed of 70 km/h. Nerul/Belapur and Kharkopar are separated by a distance of 12.4 km in the project’s first stage. The public might access it starting in November 2018. The second stage, which includes the last 14.3 kilometres, is finished. The entire train route is now closer to being completely operational as a result of this.

For commuters heading to the proposed Navi Mumbai Airport and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, the restart of train service on these rail corridors is extremely important. It will drastically cut travel time and provide essential connectivity to these critical places. CSMT to Uran commuters will be able to reach in about 1 hour and 45 minutes once the full corridor is operational.

Five stations will be located along the rail line’s path. They are Rajanpada, Uran, Nhava-Sheva, Gavhanpada, and Dronagiri. Additionally, these stations will have a number of bridges, which are essential for tying together various regions. But there have been issues with the project, including missing deadlines. It is a result of objections from nearby villages over concerns with compensation.

It is noteworthy to note that the project’s estimated current cost is approximately INR 2,970 Crore, which is much higher than the INR 495 Crore initial estimate. The Central Railway is dedicated to offering effective rail services to fulfill the expanding demands of the region, even in the face of significant expense overruns.
