A zero-carbon goods service employing high-speed rail has been introduced by UK train operator Varamis Rail and its partners for the nation’s logistics industries. The launch comes after successful trial operations to confirm the operation’s reliability and viability were completed. Network Rail, Eversholt, and Steer Consultancy are a few of the project partners.

Several fully electric 4-car trains that were used for passenger service were converted to haul goods by Eversholt Rail.

The new service, which will run from Monday through Friday between Scotland and the Midlands, is intended for express shipments, shops, and third-party delivery services. It will concentrate on delivering consumer items the following day. Several fully electric 4-car trains that were used for passenger service were converted to haul goods by Eversholt Rail.

The operational permits, agreements, and train routes required to run the goods service were provided by Network Rail. “As the newest train operator in the UK, Varamis Rail is eager to promote the sustainable benefits that the railway has to offer to the UK economy along with Network Rail,” said Phil Read, managing director of Varamis Rail.

The UK government’s net zero emissions aim is anticipated to be aided by the new entirely electric service, which will act as an eco-friendly substitute for road freight.

“The demand to find a more environmentally friendly solution to moving our packages, products, or light goods around the UK has accelerated in recent years due to the growth of online shopping and home deliveries; one solution is the electrified rail network.” The UK government’s net zero emissions aim is anticipated to be aided by the new entirely electric service, which will act as an eco-friendly substitute for road freight. It will allow access to urban rail stations that are situated right in the middle of cities.
