India and Vietnam ink military logistics support agreement

The relations between the two nations, India and Vietnam have been exceptionally cordial since the foundations of these nations were laid. Recently, these countries, India and Vietnam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the support of mutual logistics of the nations in presence of the two Defence ministers when Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh was on a visit to the Southeast Asian Country.

The Defence Ministry has shared a statement where it mentioned that the ‘Joint Vision Statement on India – Vietnam Defence Partnership towards the year 2030’ was signed by both defence ministers, which will notably intensify the scale and potential of the defence cooperation that is already existing with great relations. “In current times of increased cooperation engagements between the two countries’ defence forces, this is a big step towards streamlining processes for mutually beneficial logistic assistance and is the first such substantial agreement which Vietnam has signed with any country,” the logistics agreement stated.

After the meeting with his Vietnamese complement, the Indian Defence Minister, Mr Rajnath Singh shared on his Twitter account that he had an excellent meeting with General Phan Van Giang. He also added that both of them had long discussions on practical and productive initiatives that can be taken and how they will be helpful for further expansion and development of the bilateral defence activities and other global issues as well. concluding the post, Mr Singh added that the close security and defence relations with Vietnam are a crucial factor in the steadiness of the Indo – Pacific region.

Beginning with the first one, the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement with the United States in the year 2016, several logistics agreements have been signed by India with all the close countries including Singapore, France, and South Korea. These logistics agreements are administrative agreements that facilitate access to the military facilities for a nation in exchange for fuel and other provisions that are availed by mutual consent making the logistics support easy and boosting the military’s operational turnaround when deployed outside of India.

Both the Defence ministers of the two nations also made an agreement on the early finalisation of the Defence line of credit of value $US 50 million, which has been extended to Vietnam. The donation of two simulators and an award for monetary has also been announced by Mr Rajnath Singh to the Air Force Officers Training School for the enhancement of the potential of the armed forces of Vietnam.  The official trip of Mr Singh began by paying respects at the Mausoleum of late President Ho Chin Minh in Hanoi.

The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and India is shared since the year 2016 and the vital factor of this partnership is the defence cooperation that the nations share. In the Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific vision of India, Vietnam is an important partner. The engagements of bilateral defence have grown over the periods including several contacts between the two nations which include military-to-military exchanges, defence policy dialogues, bilateral exercises, UN peacekeeping cooperation, high-level visits, and capacity building and training programmes.
