A vessel allegedly containing radioactive substances, headed from Karachi in Pakistan to Shanghai in China was intercepted by the Customs and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and brought to Mundra Port managed by Adani, in Kutch. A joint team of DRI and customs obstructed the vessel and redirected it to the Mundra Port.

On 18 November 2021, a joint Customs and DRI team seized several containers at Mundra Port from a foreign vessel on concerns that they contained undeclared hazardous cargo. The cargo was listed as non-hazardous, the seized containers had hazard class 7 markings (which indicate radioactive substances). 

The containers were not destined for the Mundra Port, but it was the route from Pakistan to Shanghai in China, the government authorities had them offloaded at Mundra Port for further inspection, a statement by Adani said. APSEZ (Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited) gave all assistance for this operation and thanked customs and DRI personnel for their quick and coordinated action. The Adani Group in a statement thanked the authorities for due diligence and assured to fully assist any action for India’s security.

A DRI Ahmedabad zone official stated that customs officials were carrying the examination and the substance in the container is being examined. Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs had also ordered the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to probe a case linked to a shipping consignment which was cleared in June this year by Gujarat’s Mundra Port. 

According to sources, the consignment was received by a businessman and an investigation is being done in a matter related to the seizure of 3,000 kg heroin at the port. In September, the case was given to the NIA and the matter was registered by the Delhi unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Eight persons including Indians were arrested in connection with the seizure of 3,000 kg heroin worth Rs 21,000 crore from the Mudra Port in September. Arrested people included an Indian Couple whose name was M Sudhakar and his wife Durga Vaishali, which were alleged for running a Vijayawada registered M/S Ashi Trading Company. And, this company officially imported the consignment stating that it contained semi-processed talc stones.
