Senior officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Ahmedabad-based Adani Group were present at the brief function held at the airport in the early hours. Adani Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (ATIAL) will now operate, manage and develop the airport for a period of 50 years under a concession agreement signed with the AAI.
The Adani Group had won the competitive bidding process for the 89-year-old airport held in February 2019. State-run Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) and the GMR Group were the unsuccessful bidders. In August last year, the Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a resolution protesting airport privatization. Established in 1932, the Thiruvananthapuram airport was declared an ‘international airport’ tag in 1991.

The Adani Group has taken over the operation, management, and development of the international airport in Thiruvananthapuram, saying it is now a Gateway to Goodness. The company in a tweet said that it was privileged to serve and welcome passengers to God’s Own Country.

Last year, the State Assembly unanimously passed a resolution protesting the privatisation of the airport with the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticising its takeover by the Adani group.Â
The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the first of the four airports in the State to be established. It was set up in 1932, was owned and operated by the Airports Authority of India.
